Noodle Journey Episode 179: Indomie Mi Goreng Barbeque Chicken Flavor

Today I’ve got something from Indomie that I had a while back before I started the channel, and I thought it was time to give it a proper review: this is Indomie Mi Goreng Barbeque Chicken Flavor. I’ve really slept on reviewing stuff from Indomie, and for that I apologize; it kind of gets lost in the shuffle of all the other varieties I have in my queue, but I’m hoping to fix that going forward. I grabbed some packs of Indomie’s other exported varieties like this one, because I always hear everybody talk about the regular Mi Goreng or the Hot & Spicy flavor, but never so much the other ones.

Inside the package, you get five distinct packets: oil, sweet soy sauce, chili sauce, fried onions, and soup powder. The noodles themselves are the standard Indomie noodles we know and love. The sauce packets do not appear to contain any animal products; based on the ingredient list, this is a vegan-friendly product. The sodium count is 990 mg, which is in line with the other Mi Goreng varieties.

The preparation is the standard method: boil the noodles for about three minutes, drain them, mix in the sauce packets, and then add the fried onions as a topping last. The bolder aroma definitely sets this one apart.

Noodles:

These are the same great Indomie noodles, and I mean that in the best possible way. They are thin, chewy, and they always have a perfect texture when cooked properly; they hold the sauce extremely well, and they are simply a classic.

Spiciness:

The sauce contains a mild bit of heat, and it is definitely built up nicely. It’s a mild linger on the lips and tongue, but it’s certainly not a crazy fire. It’s reminiscent of most sambal oelek I’ve bought at the Asian market.

Overall:

The flavor here is amazing; it’s much bolder than the original, more savory, and decidedly less sweet. It might not be what you expect when you hear the word “barbeque,” but is rather more of peppery, garlicky take on the original M Goreng flavors. I’m willing to say that this ranks right beside the original and hot & spicy flavors for me as something I would very much put into the rotation alongside either of those two flavors. It’s a bolder flavor than you might expect, and if you prefer your noodles to be on the savory side, or if the sweetness of the other Mi Goreng flavors is just a little too much for you, then this is definitely one you should try.
